When I began composing the project on Lucien Laviscount this summer, rumours circulated about whether Lucien could be the next James Bond and that his name was on the shortlist of potential candidates. While the verdict remains unknown, Laviscount’s characters transcend the confines of a label; they are not merely roles that the media often associate with superficiality, attaching faces to imaginary personas. Lucien’s impact on the cinematic landscape has been powerful and profound, going far beyond a simple assignment.

NICCOLO LAPO LATINI Your career has spanned various television genres. How do you choose your roles?

LUCIEN LAVISCOUNT Acting reveals a lot about someone. I feel it makes you ask yourself, “How can I relate? What would that feel like?” before I can honestly express that from the character’s perspective. I’ve always been drawn to roles that aren’t what they seem on the surface, to give them different shades that bring them to life. At the core of it all is my passion for the craft. I choose characters that allow me to explore different sides of myself, challenge me emotionally and mentally, and hopefully resonate with people. Whether comedy, drama, or anything in between, I look for depth, authenticity, and a story that speaks to me.

Is there a character you have identified with the most, and is there a role or genre you dream of exploring but haven’t had the chance to yet?

LL
When I played them, they were all very relevant to my life. I’d love to play someone in a biopic, like Harry Belafonte or Arthur Ashe. Stepping in their shoes and exploring their world would be a fascinating challenge for men who had to overcome adversity.

What moments or experiences off-set have had the most significant influence on your acting?

LL
Behind the scenes is where the authentic storytelling happens, whether from the crew who have stories from previous sets, actors and their journeys. The most minor thing that could be unintentional at that moment could have considerable influence. One of the most important things for me as an actor is to listen and be in the moment because you don’t want to miss out on those gems.

It’s essential to be honest with yourself. There’s a strength that comes with being vulnerable, but an understanding of where you can be vulnerable is key. I’ve not found a role where I’ve had to really dig deep, per se.

How do you maintain a sense of balance and humility in a world that often puts actors on a pedestal? 

LL
I don’t count the wins, just the losses, so I’m always striving to be a better person from them and, in turn, be a better storyteller. Anyone passionate about what they do understands that the journey is more important than getting to that imaginary finish line because it doesn’t exist.

I fell into it from an early age; I just loved being in these worlds, so far detached from my life at home. It was too late; as I got older and understood the industry more, I was hooked. There’s an endless amount of stories that need to be told. Life is the biggest inspiration; you have to open your eyes and go on the ride.

Fame can be overwhelming, and you’ve spoken about the importance of mental health in many interviews. What strategies or habits have you developed to stay grounded and connected to your true self? Is there an idea or principle that guides you in your professional and personal life?

LL
Fame is a funny word to me. I get that I’m on a popular show right now, but no one knows what tomorrow might hold. I count my blessings daily that I get to do something I love and that my work can touch many people worldwide. But I’m still the same lad who grew up in Burnley, a product of my parents, who raised me to respect others, be kind, and work hard. I wouldn’t say I have any strategies to help me stay grounded. I’m just me, trying to be the best version of myself. A version that 10-year-old me could look up to and be proud of.

You’ve previously talked about how important sports have been for you. How do you think the discipline you gained through sports has helped you in your acting career?

LL
Immensely, especially in this industry where as soon as you think you’re on a roll, something comes from left field, and the next thing you know, you’re 2-1 down heading into the final minute, how do you pivot? It gives you the resilience to keep moving and the notion of seeing progress over time. Nothing happened overnight, and I’m thankful for that; I’m grateful for every audition I didn’t get that shaped my craft into what it is today and will continue.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career so far?

LL
I’ve got a way of only seeing the positive side in whatever I’ve had to overcome. What was probably a challenge at the time doesn’t even register as I’m trying to stay one step ahead.

I’m ready to play that transformative role in my evolution as an actor. As a person, climb a mountain, sail across the Atlantic, kick it with a distant tribe, feed some giraffes and retain my selfproclaimed title as the backgammon world champion.
