Nuit Incolore –  A Journey Through the Darkest of Nights

Following the viral success of his hit piece Dépassé, Swiss-raised artist Nuit Incolore has quickly captivated listeners with his unique blend of music and storytelling, crafting a soundscape that gives us insight into his innermost experiences.

Blending rap, pop, and French chanson, his compositions delve into the themes of solitude, abandonment, and love.

Drawing inspiration from iconic French singer Charles Aznavour, as well as the enchanting world of Tim Burton, Nuit Incolore’s music transcends genres, offering a deeply emotional experience.

JUAN LUCA WICK: I am having a tough time deciding how to address you. Should I call you Théo, perhaps Nuit, or rather Mr. Incolore?

NUIT INCOLORE: You can call me Théo – Théo is easy.

JLW: I must assume that Nuit Incolore is more of a professional and public persona.

NI: Initially, that was the case. I came up with Nuit Incolore to maintain a sense of privacy. But as Nuit Incolore is a bit long, fans have started calling me Théo. Théo is shorter, and Nuit Incolore would be too long to shout at me when I’m performing on stage.

At this point, Nuit Incolore is as much a part of my identity as Théo is. I identify with both equally.

JLW: How did you come up with the name Nuit Incolore?

NI: Nuit Incolore translates to ‘Colorless Night.’ I work at night, and I compose at night. As a student, I always studied at night, especially the nights before tests. Nuit Incolore represents the dark, colorless nights I spend working on music.

JLW: From what I understand you started making music at a very young age. When you first entered the music industry professionally you were only a teen. I find that very impressive.

NI: Music only recently became more than a pastime. Growing up, my parents owned a musical instrument and record shop in Valais, so I spent my childhood surrounded by music and musicians. Later, they enrolled me in the conservatory to study piano. Now, music is more than just amusement or passion – it is my career.

JLW: The entertainment industry is particularly judgmental. How did you handle judgement at first?

NI: In my mind, I am by myself – I am solo –so it wasn’t difficult for me to distance myself from people who would judge me or not support me. I want to follow my own path and create something I enjoy, and hopefully, others will enjoy too. I want to make my parents proud – they don’t judge me; they actually support me.

JLW: How do you believe your upbringing in Switzerland shaped your relationship with music?

NI: Well, the music industry in Switzerland is still in its early stages of growth, so I’m not sure if or how it has affected me. There are only a few Swiss musicians. With my francophone audience, I perform not just in Switzerland, but also in France and Belgium. My passion for music determines where I go – music is home to me.

JLW: Given how significant music has been in your early years, was it always clear to you that your future would be in the music industry?

NI: Yes! I wanted to become a music teacher at a secondary school. I would have loved to show students how exciting classical music can be. But during the Covid-19 pandemic, I began posting videos of myself singing and playing the piano online. One thing led to another, and I found myself composing and singing my own music.

JLW: To most of us, music is an art form as well as an expression of creativity. Do you have other ways of expressing your creativity beyond music?

NI: I like to cook. As a musician, I have different instruments to compose with. As a cook, things aren’t too different: instead of instruments, I have ingredients. Hopefully, both in music and in the kitchen, those components result in something great. When I’m not on stage, I’m cooking.

JLW: What about fashion?

NI: Fashion has always been important to me. As a musician, the way I dress is important – the way I dress is an extension of my self expression as an artist. Both my music and my dress sense communicate what I feel.
