“Pink Isn’t a Trend. It’s Me”

MARIA ALEXANDROVA

Pink is not merely a colour, but a declaration of self. For model Maria Alexandrova, fashion becomes a space in which identity is neither fixed nor dictated by the gaze of others, but claimed on one’s own terms. Between visibility and individuality, the personal and the performative, she questions what it means to stand apart in a world that is quick to turn difference into a trend. In this conversation, Alexandrova reflects on the solitude of being first, the courage of remaining singular and the quiet radicalism of refusing to become anything other than oneself.

When did you first dye your hair pink?

In 2020.

I wasn’t looking for approval, but for a way to become more fully aligned with myself. Once you discover who you are, the gaze of others loses its power to define you. What people project onto you no longer belongs to you. Pink was never an experiment. It is my point of assemblage, the place where my identity finds its centre.

How did you react when people around you said it was too much?

I didn’t react. I never needed permission to be who I am. There comes a point when identity is no longer something you negotiate with the world, but an inner certainty. From then on, other people’s words no longer have the same reach. Pink was never a provocation or an experiment. It is a position. A way of existing without apology.

Pink is everywhere now. How do you feel about that?

It’s true, pink is everywhere. Adele wore it in 2024, Zara Larsson appeared on a magazine cover with pink hair, and Dior brought it to the runway. For some, it is a passing choice; for others, an accessory to be put on and taken off according to the mood of the moment.

But there is a difference between adopting a colour and inhabiting it. The pink in my hair has been there for years. It has endured time, scrutiny and shifting contexts without losing its meaning. It is not an image I construct for others, nor an identity I can abandon when it falls out of fashion. I am not following a trend. I have been living within it long before it became one.

What does it mean to you to have been the first?

It is not about fame or recognition. Being first means choosing a path when there is no collective gaze capable of understanding it yet. It means accepting the solitude of a decision before others begin to see it as a possibility.

But the real difficulty lies not in arriving first. It lies in remaining faithful to that choice when the world finally discovers it, interprets it and attempts to claim it as its own. To open a path is a gesture. To stay on it is an act of conviction.

What comes next?

The same. Pink. Me. No pauses.

Because not everything that changes needs to become something else. Sometimes, the most radical way forward is to remain faithful to what you have already found.
